Pan African Resource’s Evander gold mine, in Mpumalanga, poured its first gold obtained through its newly commissioned Elikhulu tailings retreatment project on August 16. The R1.74-billion project uses a conventional carbon-in-leach circuit with a proprietary preoxidation process through which one-million tons of tailings is processed a month at an all-in sustaining cost of production of between $650/oz and $700/oz. The Elikhulu project is expected to produce about 55 000 oz/y of gold for 14 years and has created 400 permanent jobs.
