The order book for the locally manufactured V-Type girder crane, which Demag – a Terex brand – launched in South Africa in March, has picked up significantly, with the overhead travelling crane receiving a positive response in local markets.
The V-Type girder crane, which has won numerous global design awards and carries 14 international patents, is the latest innovation in overhead crane design and offers “major benefits” when compared with a conventional box-cut girder crane, says Terex Material Handling sales and marketing senior manager Richard Roughley.
The design of the V-Type girder crane has reduced the oscillation frequency by 30% and has lowered its weight by an average of 17%. The V-Type girder crane also has an average service life of about 500 000 load changes, which is double that of a crane with a conventional girder.
Roughley says the V-Type girder crane is suitable for most industries in indoor and outdoor environments.
It is currently available locally in single girder execution to a maximum span of 30 m and a lifting capacity of 12.5 t. Future ranges will include a double girder design with a maximum lifting capacity of 50 t. The double-girder crane will offer a span of up to 35 m as standard.
The V-Type single-girder crane is manufactured in Boksburg, Gauteng, from where it is supplied to sub-Saharan African countries.
Roughley tells Mining Weekly that Demag will have its general product range on display at Electra Mining Africa 2016, but that its main focus will be on the V-Type girder crane.
Commenting on new product developments, he says Demag will launch the DMR electric wire rope hoist in local markets next year. The product was launched in Europe in 2015, where it has already enjoyed “huge” success.
The DMR modular rope hoist offers a range of components that can be configured to create a rope hoist to meet customers’ specific application needs. For the first time, DMR enables rope hoists to be implemented in the form of a compact C-design or coaxial design on the basis of a single product. This feature, Demag notes, underlines the modular rope hoist’s suitability for conventional cranes and crabs, as well as for stationary applications in the mechanical and plant engineering sectors where lifting, towing, travel, holding or positioning tasks are in demand.
