Engineering project house TWP has been awarded the feasibility-study contract by Impala Platinum for the R3,4-billion 17 Shaft project.

The study for the greenfields development at the world’s second-largest platinum producer’s Rustenburg operations is expected to be completed by March 2007. Work on site will start, pending Impala Platinum board approval.

TWP director and project sponsor Murray Macnab says the study would focus on the scope, estimation and financial returns on all aspects of the project, including the sinking of the main and ventilation shafts to 1 800 m. “With approvals and the scope of work progressing according to schedule, full production of 235 000 t/m is expected to be achieved by 2016, contributing in the region of 17% of Impala’s production,” Macnab says. TWP is a leading engineering, procurement and construction-management and project-management services provider to the mining and minerals industries.
