A contract worker has died in a rock fall at the San Ignacio underground mine, in Mexico, precious metals miner Great Panther reported on Friday.

Operations at the area of the accident have been suspended to allow for an investigation. The rest of the San Ignacio mine producing areas were unaffected.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our colleagues and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends," Great Panther interim president and CEO Jeffrey Mason said.

"We will commit all available resources to determine the cause of this accident so that we can work to prevent such a tragedy from occurring again. Any necessary steps to prevent the recurrence of such accidents will be taken immediately."
