Wage talks between unions and gold producers resumed at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration on Tuesday, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) said.
"Union representatives, employers and facilitators met at 14:00. As NUM we hope for the best," said union spokesman Lesiba Seshoka.
Last month, the unions Solidarity, the NUM and Uasa declared a dispute with the Chamber of Mines, which represents the gold producers.
The NUM wanted surface workers to earn a minimum of R7 000 a month, and underground and open-cast workers R8000 a month.
UASA and Solidarity have demanded increases of 18% and 10% respectively.
The gold producers have tabled a five percent offer.
Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union treasurer Jimmy Gama said his union was part of the negotiations.
"We were invited to take part in the negotiations. We will rather wait for the final outcome before we can say anything further," he said.
Amcu has asked for a 150% increase for entry-level underground workers.
Seshoka said the talks might take days before an agreement was concluded.
