An employee of Harmony Gold Mining was killed in a fall-of-ground (FoG) incident at the Moab Khotsong mine, in the North West at the weekend.

The relevant authorities, as well as the family members of the deceased were informed and a comprehensive in-loco investigation is under way.

“The board, executives and management of Harmony wish to extend their deepest condolences to the family and colleagues of the deceased. Harmony will provide the necessary support to the family as we mourn the loss of our colleague,” Harmony CEO Peter Steenkamp comments.

This comes less than two weeks after Department of Mineral Resources and Energy chief inspector of mines and Mine Health and Safety Council chairperson David Msiza announced that the mining industry had been making strides in preventing FoG incidents.

On August 3, he told attendees at the Minerals Council South Africa's National Day of Health and Safety in Mining that there had been no FoG-related fatalities in the gold and platinum mines this year.
