Exxaro strengthens board with nonexec appointments

JSE-listed diversified miner Exxaro Resources has appointed Dr Pumla Mnganga, Karin Ireton, Billy Mawasha, and Ben Magara to the board as independent nonexecutive directors, effective February 7.

Mnganga is the founder and MD of Lehumo Women’s Investment Holdings and previously served as transformation executive at Tongaat Hulett. She is currently also an independent nonexecutive director on the boards of Altron, Adcorp Holdings, Spar Group and Novus Holdings.

Ireton previously served as group sustainability head for both Standard Bank Group and Anglo American, but has of late worked as an independent consultant, with a focus on climate change impacts on businesses.

Mawasha is a former operations head of Kumba Iron Ore and former country head of Rio Tinto in South Africa, following which he founded an investment company and provides strategic leadership to his investee companies.

He is also a nonexecutive director for Murray & Roberts and Metair Investments.

Magara, former CEO of Lonmin and Anglo Coal South Africa, and former executive engineering and projects head for Anglo American Platinum, is chairperson of Africa Mining & Metals Group. The mining veteran also serves as nonexecutive director on the boards of Weir Group and Grindrod.

Meanwhile, Exxaro also announced that its director and remuneration committee chairperson Erasmus Myburgh will be retiring. He has served as an independent nonexecutive director for Exxaro since September 2016.
