Mining engineer George Burns, the CEO of Canadian miner Eldorado Gold, has been appointed an independent director of Vancouver-based Turquoise Hill Resources.

Burns has a 40-year career in gold, copper and coal mining, Turquoise Hill pointed out on Tuesday, adding that his mining and construction background in openpit and underground mines would add further depth and expertise to the board.

Eldorado is a midtier gold producer with operations in Turkey, Greece and Canada. Burns previously held the roles of COO at Centerra Gold from 2003 to 2007, senior VP for Canada and US operations at Goldcorp from 2007 to 2011, and executive VP and COO at Goldcorp from 2012 to 2017.

Turquoise Hill, which is controlled by Rio Tinto, focuses on the Pacific Rim where it is in the process of developing several large mines, the principal one being the Oyu Tolgoi project in southern Mongolia.
