The 7.8 earthquake that struck southern and central Türkiye, as well as northern and western Syria on February 6 is one of the worst disasters this century. The death toll had risen to over 40000 a week after the catastrophic event, while millions have been displaced and their homes destroyed. The human toll is unthinkable and the economic damage huge. The international humanitarian response has been encouraging, but more aid and support will be needed if the countries are to fully recover and heal. Photograph: Bloomberg
