New regulations coming into force at the end of this month state that data users must be informed when their data is nearing depletion and cannot be defaulted onto out-of-bundle data charges once their data is depleted. However, the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa stopped short of being prescriptive on data costs and the rules for the rolling over of unused data. Time will tell whether or not this leads to genuinely competitive offerings from service providers.
