Dana’s growth buoyed by Brevini technology

7th September 2018

Sporting its new company colours after acquiring the power transmission and fluid power businesses of Brevini Group early last year, Dana Incorporated is keen to show the world all it has to offer at this year’s Electra Mining Africa.

Taking full advantage of the benefits that the acquisition brought to the company, Dana is enjoying a growth in market share in industries requiring the use of transmissions, gearboxes and associated gear technology.

Founded in 1904, Dana is seen as a world leader in highly engineered solutions for improving the efficiency, performance and sustainability of off-highway drive and motion technologies.

The company supports the passenger vehicle, commercial truck and off-highway markets, as well as industrial and stationary equipment applications.

Employing more than 30 000 people in 33 countries, on six continents, Dana’s worldwide leadership, strengthened by the international presence of Brevini, is the key to serving over 5 000 clients around the world.

“Our people work tirelessly to deliver long-term value to our customers with technologies customised to individual requirements through a network of more than 100 strategically located engineering and manufacturing locations, and distribution facilities,” says Dana SAC South Africa FM Corné Crause.

While Dana delivers fully optimised Spicer drivetrain systems and individual product solutions to mobile off-highway customers in construction, agriculture, materials handling, and underground-mining markets, Brevini brings cutting-edge motion systems to the table – in the form of transmissions and gear technology.

“Our portfolio of hydraulic technologies is built on four decades of global proficiency in fluid power from the Brevini brand,” Crause says, explaining that Dana acquired the power transmission and fluid power businesses of the former Brevini Group in February 2017.

Brevini was among the world’s top five manufacturers in the mechanical transmissions and gear drives sector, thanks to growing market shares in industrial applications like the steel, plastic and materials handling industries.

“With global expertise in the design and manufacturing of high-efficiency technologies, the Brevini Power Transmission line includes planetary and helical gear units, gear motors, and winches, along with planetary gearboxes and industrial power transmissions,” Crause notes.

The company’s patented Posiplan gear units, inherited from Brevini, are aimed at shaft mounted applications and feature a combination of planetary, helical and bevel helical gears. This design takes advantage of the strengths of the combined technologies: compact size, reliability and easy maintenance. This new series of lighter, more compact gear reducers surpasses traditional solutions, ensuring shorter production times and lower production costs.

The performance with respect to traditional technology is equal, but with lower weight and costs, Crause says.

Using Brevini’s 55 years of acquired experience in the sector, the company’s power product technology now augmenting Dana, is used in cutting-edge new industries, such as waste recycling and wind turbine technology.
