South Africa is a major producer and exporter of coal, ranking among the top ten countries in the world for these activities. The industry is of major significance to the country’s economy, with coal being the source of 93% of the country’s electricity, 70% of its primary energy and 30% of its petroleum liquid fuels. Coal is also one of the country’s leading mineral revenue generators.
