Conference to evaluate status  quo of mining sector

MIKE TEKE The Seriti CEO will discuss the relevancy of coal and its prospects at this year's Joburg Indaba

The Joburg Indaba, hosted by mineral resources, energy and mining conference specialists Resources 4 Africa, draws together captains of the industry, government officials and investors to present their strategic thoughts on the current state of the mining sector.

During the event – to be held on October 5 and 6 – industry dignitaries Mark Cutifani and Sipho Nkosi will engage in conversation on how to ‘think global and act local’.

Mining major Anglo American chairperson and mining industry employers’ organisation Minerals Council South Africa VP Nolitha Fakude will address attendees on the topic ‘Beyond the commodity: How can mineral development fuel socioeconomic change?’, while her colleague, Minerals Council CEO Roger Baxter, will address the future of South Africa’s mining industry.

The event will feature discussions among various mining majors’ representatives, including a panel with representatives from three majors: Gold Fields CE Chris Griffith, Sibanye-Stillwater CEO Neal Froneman and Impala Platinum CEO Nico Muller. Chaired by international professional services firm PwC energy, utilities and resources leader Andries Rossouw, the panel will explore the theme ‘Why internationalise – is the grass really greener on the other side?’

Building on the previous panel’s discussion, under the theme ‘The challenges and opportunities of operating in South Africa and why being in South Africa is “lekker”!’, will be gold major Harmony Gold CEO Peter Steenkamp, Anglo American CEO Natascha Viljoen and mining specialist Tlou Commodities CEO Lucky Kgatle. Consulting firm EY Africa energy, with natural resources leader Sandra du Toit will chair this discussion.

Sibanye-Stillwater chief regional officer Richard Stewart, iron-ore mining company Kumba Iron Ore CFO Bothwell Mazarura, asset management company Regarding Capital Management and management company Counterpoint Asset Management chairperson and director Piet Viljoen, will take part in a discussion on ‘Capital allocation in a volatile world – short- vs long-term needs’.

State-owned power utility Eskom Group CE André de Ruyter will engage industry on Eskom’s turnaround strategies, progress and challenges, while South African rail, port and pipeline company Transnet CEO Portia Derby will reveal plans for the parastatal organisation, particularly on how it intends to capacitate the mining industry’s growth.

The event will also feature a panel discussion with diversified mining and minerals company African Rainbow Minerals (ARM) COO Phillip Tobias, gold producer Pan African Resources CEO Cobus Loots and private investment company Menar chairperson Dr Mpumelelo Mkhabela, who will reveal why their companies can be said to be ‘Proudly South African, But With a Different Future’, which will talk to the importance of geographic diversification. Professional services firm Deloitte energy, resources and industrial leader Andrew Lane will moderate the discussion.

South African thermal coal business Thungela Resources CEO July Ndlovu, Kumba Iron Ore CEO Mpumi Zikalala and ARM ferrous division CE André Joubert will explore the theme of ‘Economic changes post-covid, the Ukraine War and how SA mining is navigating new global realities’, while coal miner Seriti Resources CEO Mike Teke will discuss why his company’s commodity is still relevant and how it might fair in a “back-to-normal” commodity cycle.

Resource investment company Rule Investment Media president and CEO Rick Rule will join independent financial advisory group Rothschild & Co. London senior adviser Fiona Perrott-Humphrey and London-based IOSCO-regulated price reporting agency Benchmark Mineral Intelligence executive editors Sandy McGregor, Allan Gray and Henry Sanderson in a discussion on the theme, ‘The international investment landscape and key issues facing miners over the coming decade’.

Meanwhile, independent think tank Centre for Development and Enterprise executive director Ann Bernstein and nonprofit organisation Rivonia Circle director Songezo Zibi will share their perspectives on a“fresh” approach to politics and policy for the country and the mining industry.

Further, South African trade unions National Union of Mineworkers president Daniel Balepile, National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa general secretary Irvin Jim and Solidarity general secretary Gideon du Plessis will take part in “interview-style” conversations on current labour relations in the industry.

The Joburg Indaba gala dinner will take place on October 4, with Resources 4 Africa to induct new members into the South Africa Mining Hall of Fame.
