COAL DEADLOCK

Riot police are seen blocking protesters during a rally against opencast brown coal mining at the Garzweiler mine, a large surface lignite mine north-west of Cologne, in Germany. The German city of Bonn is hosting United Nations-led climate talks that end today, November 17. Thousands of people took to the streets of Bonn ahead of the talks calling for the phasing out of coal as a source of power. Indecision around ending coal production has been one of the sticking points in the coalition negotiations between the recently re-elected German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, and her would-be allies, the Greens and the probusiness Free Democrats.
