BIG WOOING SMALL

Chamber of Mines of South Africa president Mike Teke says the door of the chamber is wide open to emerging mining companies. Seen at this month’s Junior Mining Indaba conference, in Johannesburg, Teke called for opportunities to be created for juniors through the unlocking of the Waterberg coalfield and clarifying of the regulatory framework for fracking for shale gas in the Karoo. He noted that the world of juniors was alive and strong in Africa and he believed South Africans also had the ability to go beyond its borders and explore in Africa. More than 100 juniors are exploring in Africa for a variety of commodities, but these are mainly from Australia and Canada, where funding for emerging miners is far more readily available than in South Africa.
