Engineering, procurement and construction management and consultation company Chiyoda Singapore, a subsidiary of integrated engineering company Chiyoda Corporation, has been awarded a $900-million offshore engineering and procurement contract for mining and processing company PT Freeport Indonesia’s (PTFI’s) Indonesia Copper Smelter (ICS) project.

The ICS project site is based in the Gresik regency, in East Java, and will process up to two-million tons a year of Grasberg copper concentrate.

PTFI, an affiliate of Freeport-McMoRan headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona, in the US, operates the Grasberg minerals district, one of the world’s largest copper and gold deposits, in the highland areas of the Mimika district, in Papua province, Indonesia.

Chiyoda states that the scope of the project includes offshore engineering and procurement services for a copper smelter, refinery and ancillary facilities to produce finished copper cathode.

“The Chiyoda group was awarded this contract owing in large part to its performance in delivering many projects in the materials and resource sector since the 1990s, its wealth of construction experience in copper smelter-related facilities, one of which is in Indonesia, and excellent technologies,” PTFI explains.
