For many organisations, enterprise transformation begins with technology. Yet despite significant investment in ERP platforms, AI initiatives and digital modernisation, many transformation programmes continue to fall short of delivering their intended business value. According to Hendus Venter, group chief information and digital officer at energy solutions provider, Jubaili Bros, technology is only one part of a much larger equation. Speaking at the most recent PMO Forum event for project management office (PMO) leaders, an interest group under the umbrella of Project Management South Africa (PMSA)which is hosted by Project Portfolio Office, Venter shared lessons learned from Jubaili Bros' ambitious business transformation programme.

The newly launched Tonkmeter Material Recovery Facility (MRF), located on a private landfill site in Springs, has been established through a significant infrastructure investment by Petco, supported by a strategic co-investment from MetPac-SA – South Africa's Producer Responsibility Organisation for metal packaging. Once fully operational, the facility will be capable of recovering and processing up to 600 tonnes of recyclable materials every month, including metal packaging, PET plastic and liquid board cartons.

When a slope fails in an open-pit mine, the consequences extend far beyond a production shutdown. Lives are at risk, equipment is threatened, and the operational credibility of an entire site can be called into question. It is precisely this reality that has driven M84 Geotech (Pty) Ltd to build what its founder describes as not just a service company, but a geo-hazard mitigation partner for mining operations across Africa. Founded and led by South African entrepreneur and (Chief Executive Steward) CES, Khomotso Moleke, M84 Geotech has spent over eleven years and more than 40 completed projects establishing itself as one of the continent's most trusted names in rockfall protection and slope stabilisation for open-pit mines. The Polokwane-based firm combines advanced rope access techniques with integrated protection systems to reach the hard-to-access terrain that conventional methods simply cannot service safely or efficiently.

The central question is no longer how much infrastructure we build, but whether it meaningfully improves lives. Infrastructure is widely recognised as the backbone of economic development. But in South Africa’s current context; marked by deep inequality, high unemployment, and growing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) expectations; it is no longer enough to deliver projects.
Artificial intelligence has moved rapidly from experimentation to core infrastructure, bringing with it new demands on data centres worldwide. Since the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022, the AI conversation has accelerated dramatically – evolving from early curiosity to a strategic priority for organisations across industries. “In just three years, the landscape has evolved dramatically. At first, generative AI was all about writing emails, summarising documents and handling tedious tasks. Then last year, we started seeing agentic AI, with systems that don’t just follow instructions but begin taking stewardship over tasks. It’s exciting, but it’s also challenging to navigate.”

For operations that use heavy industrial equipment, downtime is one of the most significant operational challenges. Unlike smaller assets that can be easily replaced or moved, heavy equipment is often highly specialised and costly to transport.

For many years, the success of mining Social and Labour Plans (SLPs) has been measured through straightforward outputs: the number of people trained, bursaries awarded and jobs created. Those indicators made sense when mining was one of South Africa’s largest employers. During the 1980s, the industry employed close to 800,000 people, with labour-intensive gold mining accounting for the majority of jobs. Today, despite remaining a cornerstone of the economy, the sector directly employs fewer than 500,000 people. Advances in mechanisation, automation and digital technologies have enabled mines to improve productivity, safety and environmental performance while requiring significantly fewer employees.

South Africa's plastics recycling industry continued its remarkable growth trajectory during 2025, even as the country's manufacturing sector contracted and ongoing weaknesses in the national waste management system threatened to undermine further progress. The latest plastics consumption and recycling figures for the year ending December 2025, released by Plastics SA, show that although domestic virgin polymer consumption declined by 2.8%, plastics recycling continued its upward trajectory, with total plastics recycled increasing by 3% to 485,000 tonnes. The findings reinforce South Africa's position as one of the world's leading performers in mechanical plastics recycling, while highlighting the urgent need to strengthen waste collection and support local manufacturing.

Hundreds of supply chain professionals from across Africa and around the world will convene in Cape Town this month to learn, share knowledge and network at the annual SAPICS Conference. Now in its 48th year, this event is more important than ever in a supply chain environment that is being impacted by shifting trade policies, rising costs, rapid technology advances and growing risk, says supply chain industry body SAPICS. Artificial intelligence, robotics, circular supply chains, ethical sourcing, public sector procurement, intra-African trade and healthcare supply networks are among the topics on the agenda at the conference, which takes place from 19 to 22 July 2026 at the Century City Conference Centre. This year's event is also significant because SAPICS is celebrating its 60th anniversary. This milestone is reflected in the 2026 SAPICS Conference theme "Legacy to Leadership: 60 Years of Connection, Collaboration and Transformation".

In open-pit mining, the difference between a managed risk and a catastrophic failure often comes down to one variable: time. How early can a geotechnical team detect that a slope is moving? How quickly can that movement data be interpreted, escalated, and acted upon? For mines that rely on periodic manual surveys or legacy monitoring instrumentation, the answer to both questions is often: not early enough. Maptek™, the global mining technology company exhibiting at the Slope Stability X26 Conference and Expo on 10 and 11 September 2026 at the Garden Venue in Johannesburg, is challenging that status quo with its laser-based slope monitoring system, Maptek Sentry. By enabling continuous, real-time detection of ground movement at millimetre-level precision, Sentry is shifting geotechnical risk management from a reactive discipline into a proactive, data-driven practice.

How often do we hear or read about accidents occurring in underground mines? When such incidents occur, they often result in injuries or fatalities involving employees and other persons working underground who become trapped or are affected by events such as explosions, fires, or flooding. Despite stringent health and safety legislation and compliance requirements within the mining industry, accidents do occur. These incidents are invariably traumatic experiences for everyone involved.
