Workers return from a shift at Zimplats’ Ngwarati mine, in Mhondoro-Ngezi, the Zimbabwe unit of the world’s second-biggest platinum producer, Impala Platinum. Zimplats, with country peers Mimosa and Unki, is embarking on a $100-million project to refurbish the Selous base metals refinery as part of a plan to strengthen Zimbabwe’s position in platinum. A phased 24-month recommissioning of the refinery is planned as part of a first-stage response to the government’s call for greater local beneficiation of metals and minerals.
