Toronto-listed Trevali Mining has halted mining at its Perkoa mine, after heavy rain led to flooding on Saturday, leaving eight workers missing underground.

The company on Saturday reported that the mine, in Burkina Faso, had been evacuated and that rescue operations were under way.

"We are deeply saddened by this unexpected event. Our immediate focus is on search and rescue. We will provide further updates as the situation unfolds and we determine the cause of the flooding event.

“Our thoughts are with the family, friends, and colleagues that have been impacted,” said CEO Ricus Grimbeek.
