During the Klondike Gold Rush at the turn of the twentieth century, this area of Bennett, in British Columbia, Canada, was a transit point for gold prospectors – and also the location of the Arctic Hotel & Restaurant, run by Frederick Trump, the grandfather of US President-elect Donald, who made a quick killing there. The nest egg raised was later invested in boom-town restaurants and boarding house ownership in the US, which Frederick, born Frederich, left briefly to marry in Germany. Though he was born in Kallstadt, Palatinate, then part of Bavaria, his son Fred subsequently denied his German heritage, claiming instead that his father was a Swede from Karlstad. Although both of Donald’s parents were born in Germany, they told friends and acquaintances for decades after World War II that the family was of Swedish origin.
