JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – A US aviation fuel developer has placed an order for a containerised platinum-using proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyser.

Nel Hydrogen received the $3-million contract for the containerised PEM electrolyser to be installed at the world’s first commercial ‘alcohol-to-jet’ production plant for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), built by LanzaJet.

"On-site green hydrogen production is an important component of our strategy to produce low carbon sustainable aviation fuel at our facility in Georgia," LanzaJet CEO Jimmy Samartzis stated.

Working with Nel Hydrogen will enable LanzaJet to further reduce emissions in the aviation sector.

Production capacity, when complete, will be ten-million gallons of SAF and renewable diesel a year from sustainable ethanol, with 90% SAF and 10% renewable diesel.

Nel Hydrogen stated in a release to Mining Weekly that it is thrilled to be part of what it described as a ground-breaking project with LanzaJet.

“Electrolysers can produce cost-effective hydrogen for green chemical processes, which we expect to accelerate in light of recent production tax credit legislation for low carbon hydrogen,” said Nel Hydrogen US regional sales manager Dave Wolff.

The equipment is expected to be delivered in the third quarter of 2023.
