Name: Tyrone mine.
Location: The project is located in Granty County, New Mexico, in the US.
Controlling Company: Freeport-McMoRan.
Brief Description: Tyrone is a copper mining complex about 16 km south of the historic mining community of Silver City. The mine is among the lowest-grade orebodies in Freeport’s mining portfolio.
Brief History: Before 1860, Native Americans mined turquoise at the site. Freeport-McMoRan acquired mining claims in the area from 1909 to 1916, and began concentrating ore produced from large-scale underground mining in 1916. Operations ended in 1921.
The property returned to operation as an openpit in 1967, with copper production from a concentrator. The solvent extraction/electrowinning (SX/EW) facility was commissioned in 1984. Tyrone’s concentrator suspended operations in 1992 when the property made the transition to SX/EW production.
Products: Copper.
Geology/Mineralisation: The Tyrone mine is a porphyry copper deposit. Mineralisation is predominantly secondary sulphide comprising chalcocite with leachable oxide mineralisation consisting of chrysocola.
Reserves: Total proven and probable reserves as at December 31, 2017, were estimated at nine-million metric tons grading 0.42% copper.
Mining Method: Openpit.
Major Infrastructure and Equipment: Tyrone’s copper processing facilities consist of an SX/EW operation, with a maximum capacity of about 100-million pounds of copper a year.
