The Independent Municipal and Allied Trade Union (IMATU) will today join fellow South Africans and people around the world in mourning the death of our former President, Nelson Mandela.

Today marks a sad day for all South Africans. Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was not only generous of spirit, selfless, inspirational and an excellent leader but this icon was also the father of our democratic nation. He has positively affected, encouraged and changed the lives of so many and he leaves behind a legacy of compassion, bravery and kindness. Madiba steered our country through an incredibly difficult transition period and then continued to lead by example for his remaining years on this earth,? recalled IMATU General Secretary, Johan Koen.

Nelson Mandela dedicated his life to fighting for the rights of humanity, equality, justice and democracy.

When we recall what he has sacrificed and endured for a better South Africa, we have to look at our own actions and evaluate how we can contribute towards positive change within our own homes and communities. The annual birthday of Madiba has come to represent a day in which we remember what he in his individual capacity has done for our country and what we in turn can do for each other. Today of all days we are reminded that we should make every day Mandela Day,? concluded Koen.

IMATU will be mourning the loss of the great Nelson Mandela, but celebrating the incredible legacy he has left behind.
