Name: Tambomayo mine.

Location: The Tambomayo project is located in Tapay, Caylloma province, in the Arequipa region of Peru.

Holding and Controlling Company: Buenaventura.

Brief Description: Tambomayo is one of several smaller mines that Buenaventura has been opening to maintain production. The project has mineral resources of gold, silver, zinc and lead.

Brief History: The Tambomayo project was commissioned in December 2016.

The project completed its ramp up of the plant and commercial operation by September 2017.

Products: High-grade gold and silver.

Geology/Mineralisation: Tambomayo is an epithermal/mesothermal polymetallic deposit in veins of gold and silver, with base metals in veins of quartz, emplaced in andesitic volcanic rocks from the Tertiary.

Gold is found in native state and electrum, while silver is found in sulphides and sulphosalt accompanied by galena and sphalerite. It has two main systems of veins: Mirtha, running north-west to south-east, and Paola, running north to north-east. There are also nearby exploration areas.

The main veins in the deposit form part of the Mirtha and Paola systems.

Reserves: Total proven and probable gold reserves as at December 31, 2017, were estimated at 1.9-million tonnes grading  0.28 oz gold, 9.83 oz silver, 2.50% zinc and 1.25% lead.

Mining Method: Underground.

Exploitation methods used include overhand cut-and-fill and mechanised bench-and-fill, using low-profile equipment.

Major Infrastructure and Equipment: The metallurgical process at Tambomayo comprises primary crushing, fine milling, and cyanidation in tanks to obtain rich solutions in gold and silver to be processed using the Merrill-Crowe plant.

The precipitate is dried and smelted, obtaining doré bars (gold and silver). The tailings enter into ore flotation treatment to obtain lead and zinc concentrates.

The mineral is extracted through ramps and the 4840 cross-cut, using 30 t trucks.

For the ventilation of works, there are two main 300 000 cubic feet a minute fans and secondary fans for explorations and developments. For mine drainage, there is a water pumping station with a capacity of 60 ℓ/s, which evacuates water to the 4740 level for treatment.

Prospects: The mine is operating at full capacity, following its starting commercial operations in August 2017.
