Name: South Walker Creek mine.
Location: South Walker Creek is located in the northern Bowen basin, about 25 km west-south-west of the township of Nebo, in Queensland, Australia.
Mine Owner/s: BHP Mitsui Coal (BMC), a joint venture between BHP (80%) and Mitsui and Co (20%).
Brief Description: South Walker Creek is a coal mine, which comprises several opencut coal mining pits, including Toolah, Walker, Carborough, Mulgrave, and Kemmis.
Brief History: South Walker Creek started operation in 1996.
BMC has been the sole manager of South Walker Creek mine since 2010.
Between 1996 and 2010 the mine was managed by BM Alliance Coal Operations.
Primary Metals/Minerals: The mine produces coking coal and pulverised coal injection coal.
Secondary Metals/Minerals: Not stated.
Geology/Mineralisation: Bituminous coal is mined from the Permian Rangal Coal measures.
Reserves: Total proven and probable reserves as at June 30, 2019, were estimated at 137-million tonnes.
Resources: Total measured opencut coal resources as at June 30, 2019, were estimated at 215-million tonnes and indicated resources at 119-million tonnes. Total Indicated resources were estimated at 119-million tonnes.
Total underground coal resources as at June 30, 2019, were estimated at 36-million tonnes and indicated resources at 154-million tonnes.
Mining Method: Opencut.
Major Infrastructure and Equipment: South Walker Creek coal is beneficiated on-site.
Prospects: BMC proposes to continue mining activities in the Mulgrave pit of the South Walker Creek mine, with mining progressing in a south-west direction from the existing highwall of the Mulgrave pit.
