State-owned freight logistics group Transnet is turning to the private sector in a bid to revive the fortunes of two underperforming rail corridors. The group’s rail unit has officially launched a bidding process for 16 rail slots on both the container corridor from Durban to City Deep and its southern corridor linking Gauteng to the Eastern Cape. Slots will be sold ‘Voetstoots’ to third-party operators for a period of two years on a take-or-pay basis.
