Multinational mining and metals group Sibanye-Stillwater has appointed Charles Carter as Americas chief regional officer, with effect from June 1, as the group establishes a regionalised leadership structure to help it deliver on its corporate strategy.

The new regionalised leadership structure follows on the geographical and commodity diversification undertaken by Sibanye since 2021.

Carter will be responsible for Sibanye's US platinum group metals (PGMs) operations and projects, as well as its exploration activities in Argentina and for driving the group's growth strategy in the Americas region.

His appointment complements the appointment, in December 2021, of Mika Seitovirta as Europe chief regional officer.

Further, Sibanye COO Richard Stewart will assume responsibility as Southern Africa chief regional officer, with immediate effect.

“I am confident that these appointments and changes to our C-Suite will bolster our ability to execute on our strategic intent and continue to ensure operating excellence across the group. The attraction of exceptional external talent such as Charles and Mika position the corporation for meaningful involvement in the European and American regional green metal supply chains and complements the internal development of senior management.

"The regionalised leadership is exceptionally well suited to create superior value in our quest to reverse climate change through supply of strategic metals and energy solutions,” comments CEO Neal Froneman.

Further, Sibanye has also announced that Themba Nkosi's role has broadened from chief social performance officer with a primary focus on South Africa to become chief sustainability officer providing group leadership on environment, social and governance and sustainability.

Also, reflecting the importance of innovation to the group’s success, Innovation has been adopted as a sixth value, extending Sibanye's CARES values to iCARES. Robert van Niekerk’s role has, therefore, been augmented from chief technical officer to chief technical and innovation officer.

JSE- and NYSE-listed Sibanye owns and operates gold and PGM operations in South Africa and PGM operations in the US. It also holds an interest in various green metals ventures in Europe, Australia and the US.
