JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Botswana-listed Shumba Energy believes two of its advanced baseload coal-fired energy projects could supply electricity to South Africa.

South Africa is, through its coal baseload independent power producer (IPP) programme, seeking to procure energy from both domestic IPPs, as well as through cross-border procurement.

Shumba owned the 300 MW Mabesekwa Export IPP project in the northeast of Botswana and the 300 MW Sechaba Coal IPP project near Palapye.

“The management and board of Shumba Energy have based the company’s projects, investment plan and associated project development programmes on the key strategic understanding that cross-border energy demand would eventually become a reality within Southern Africa,” said Shumba MD Mashale Phumaphi.
