A tireless search got under way earlier this month for gold bullion thought to have been buried during the War of the Triple Alliance, from 1864 to 1870. Police looked on while crowds gathered on the edge of what became a deep excavation in Aldana Canada city, 29 km from Asuncion, in Paraguay. Juan Diaz is seen displaying a coin, but that was insufficient to stop district attorney Cynthia Lovera from charging him with an environmental transgression – excavating without a permit.
