Russian Foreign Affairs Minister Sergey Lavrov is seen sharing a light moment with Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe at the sod turning of their $3-billion, 250 000 oz/y Great Dyke joint venture platinum project in Darwendale, 50 km north-west of Harare, on land the South African-controlled Zimplats mining company ceded to the government of Zimbabwe in 2006 to obtain indigenisation credits and $150-million cash, which was never paid out. The site secured by Russian State interests forms part of the land Zimplats ceded. Meanwhile, South African-linked Amari Platinum Holdings won the right to seize $45-million that Zimbabwe earned from diamond sales in Antwerp as part of a $500-million lawsuit the company is conducting through the International Court of Arbitration in Paris.
