Prominent Hill halted by fatality

PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Operations at the Prominent Hill copper mine, in South Australia, have been temporarily suspended following a fatality over the weekend.

ASX-listed Oz Minerals on Monday confirmed that an underground contractor was fatally injured at the mine on Sunday afternoon.

“Byrnecut and Oz Minerals express our deepest sympathies to the worker’s family. This incident has had a profound impact on our workforce and our priority is to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone at site. Byrnecut and Oz Minerals are providing support to the worker’s family during this very difficult time,” said Oz Minerals MD and CEO Andrew Cole.

The incident is being investigated by the South Australian Police and Safework SA, and both Oz Minerals and Byrnecut are assisting with the investigations.

The Minerals Council of Australia has extended their condolences to the ffamily, friends, emergency responders and colleagues of the deceased.

“The minerals industry is committed to, and working hard on, eliminating fatalities, injuries and occupational illnesses, with a strong focus on building and sustaining respectful workplaces,” CEO Tania Constable said on Monday.
