Technical solutions supplier BMG’s specialist solutions services for the mining sector encompass a complete project management facility in Johannesburg, which is designed to improve the operational efficiencies of every plant, states BMG contracts and projects GM André Smith.

The service encompasses product specification, custom-designed capabilities, timeous delivery of equipment, installation and commissioning, as well as the support and maintenance of equipment.

Some of the mining projects that have benefited from BMG’s project management facility include the Zimbabwe-based Ngezi platinum mine, the local Royal Bafokeng Platinum mine and the Kumtor gold mine, in Kyrgyzstan. These projects necessitated BMG’s input on Paramax drives, while Kumtor received a lubrication system upgrade.

In addition to this facility, BMG also offers extensive customer training on site at mining operations or at its upgraded premises, which includes significantly expanded training facilities at the customer service centre of the BMG Academy of Excellence at the company’s 308 000 m3 BMG World warehousing facility.

“The company recognises the need to grow engineering skills for not only its own succession requirements but also the development and sustainability of African economies. “It is important that equipment is operated correctly for optimum performance to ensure the best results and extended service life,” Smith tells Mining Weekly.

He adds that BMG’s focus on the entire production process – which combines a comprehensive range of components and engineering solutions with full technical services and dependable support – means companies can access all critical production-efficient products and services from one reliable supplier.

This integrated approach guarantees lower production costs and higher efficiencies, which contributes to increasing a project’s profitability, he notes.

Smith further enthuses that BMG’s project management team works closely with customers’ technical staff, ensuring the best mechanical reliability of plant and machinery.

“A cornerstone of BMG’s project management initiative is reliable engineering, starting with an assessment of the plant’s operating processes and budgetary parameters.”

Technical Resources and Maintenance

Smith explains that the company’s applications design capability – the nucleus of the contracts and projects division – includes upgrading and improving a machine’s performance, selecting the appropriate methods to improve the efficiency of energy consumption and the redesign of systems using the portfolio of BMG components.

He notes that the BMG components portfolio enables customers to save energy on their project, while guaranteeing that each plant enhances its productivity and maintains its equipment at the highest state of operational reliability.

“Reduced electricity costs ensure higher profitability, especially as outdated machinery often needs to be modernised to keep up with the latest energy efficient engineering trends.”

BMG’s technical resources, which ensure that components adhere to appropriate specifications and standards, offer an engineered product, as well as an inspection and testing service. The division also manages component supply, assembly and support for projects throughout Southern Africa.

These specialist services include technical applications consulting, product and system design, on-site process analysis, laboratory and on-site oil analysis, product quality control and assurance, as well as condition-monitoring services.

“BMG has identified a need for on-site maintenance services to overcome production challenges, such as incorrect equipment selection, incompatible components, as well as outdated and poorly main–tained machinery,” Smith avers.

He adds that BMG’s on-site services include application design, evaluation and optimisation, as well as installation, trouble shooting and service exchange contracts.

The company also offers predictive, planned and breakdown maintenance, as well as energy and reliability studies.

These plant maintenance solutions and services, Smith notes, ensure machine reliability, efficient maintenance procedures and the most effective control in breakdown situations.

BMG’s maintenance services include electromechanical, electronic and hydraulic, as well as unitary and bulk materials handling installations.

Other services include product-specific, full maintenance service exchange contracts; shaft- and open-drive laser alignment; and the balancing of fans or high-speed couplings, product repair and refurbishment for large gearboxes, as well as hydraulic rotary and linear systems.

Lubrication and filtration equipment and services, application system design and evaluation, as well as product design and project management, also form part of the company’s offering.
