For long, the media referred to platinum mines but from now on we will be calling them platinum group metals (PGMs) mines, in recognition of the gallant manner in which the members of the PGMs family have closed ranks during the recent period of platinum price crisis. The platinum price fell through the floor after the Dieselgate scandal turned the market against diesel cars. The increased demand for petrol vehicles sent the price of palladium and rhodium through the roof, which saved the day for the PGMs. All the attention afforded platinum alone has faded after the favoured child became the less favoured in the market. But the PGMs family has closed ranks and saved the day for the PGMs mining business.
