Rare earths developer Pensana reports that construction is progressing well at both its Saltend rare earths processing hub, in the UK, and its Longonjo rare earths mine, in Angola.

The enabling works for construction, which started in October, are delivering on schedule at both sites, with the principal contractor, engineering firm Wood, now on site at Saltend.

Wood has taken on the role of principal designer and principal contractors.

Wood is overseeing Yorkshire Water’s nominated contractor for the relocation of existing pipework along the western boundary, which is a precursor to the main contractual works starting early in 2023.

The contracts for Saltend’s earthworks have been assessed for imminent award, as per the construction plan schedule.

At Longonjo, earthsworks and civils contractor Grupo Nov has mobilised on site and started with ground clearing for the main construction camp area.

Pensana says Bushtec is progressing well with the fabrication of the construction camp buildings, which will be delivered to site in January.

Contractors associated with electrical reticulation, process water supply, tailings storage facilities and waste management services have all completed their pre-mobilisation site inspections.

Saltend remains on track to produce 12 500 t/y of rare earth products, of which 4 500 t/y will be neodymium and praseodymium oxide, from high-purity mixed rare earth sulphate produced at the Longonjo mine.
