PERTH (miningweekly.com) – ASX-listed Bauxite Resources has withdrawn its Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) referral for the North Bindoon project, in Western Australia, deciding instead to focus on its other deposits in the Darling Range.

The company stated that the referral had been withdrawn after it conducted a review of the Bindoon bauxite mining proposal and concluded that it was not economic at this point in time.

The North Bindoon joint venture (JV) with Yankuang Group had planned a mining operation of about two-million tonnes a year of bauxite, over a five-year period.

The North Bindoon referral predated the formation of the JV.

The JV was formed in 2011 and had been carrying out various baseline studies for the public environmental review before submitting the referral to the EPA. However, after extensive assessment, the JV concluded that given the large scale of its other deposits in the Darling Range region, the JV would withdraw the North Bindoon referral and concentrate on these other resource development opportunities.

Over the past 12 months, the JV has rationalised its exploration and development focus, resulting in more than 3 000 km2 of tenement area being relinquished, and the parties were now concentrating on their more prospective areas to pursue bauxite and alumina mining and refining operations.

Bauxite Resources said on Friday that the withdrawal of the North Bindoon referral would not affect the current development plans or the bauxite resources - whose value exceeded 250-million tonnes - of the company or the JV partners,
