As Professor Salim Abdool Karim so expertly outlined in his April presentation outlining the possible next steps for tackling the Covid-19 pandemic, South Africa will need to find ways to extinguish any small flames of the disease that emerge post-lockdown so as to ensure that they do not become uncontrollable and potentially force a new lockdown. The trick will be in finding the key that unlocks both economic and educational activity without unlocking a surge in infection rates. We need the curve to remain well below health capacity while the search for a treatment and vaccine continues.
