Cable manufacturer Nexans will put on display its range of cable solutions and services for the mining sector in Hall 8 of this year’s Electra Mining Africa.

With cables being the only means of getting power to electrical mobile machines, Nexans highlights the important role that cables play in mining operations.

Mining cables are divided into three main categories, including dynamic excavation mining and tunnelling cables; static or semistatic excavation mining and tunnelling cables; and infrastructure cables for downstream processing plants.

The dynamic excavation cables (reeling and trailing cables) present higher requirements in terms of mechanical resistance and flexibility than the usual fixed installation cables. For this reason they are designed and tested according to stringent or international standards.

Static or semistatic excavation cables are mechanically less challenging than dynamic cables. These typically include shaft or gallery cables for underground mines, or conveyor belt cables, and present simpler design and construction.

Infrastructure cables for downstream processing plants are equipped for crushing, washing or minerals processing plants and the electrical and mechanical requirements are usually simpler and correspond to general industrial standards.

Nexans highlights that the group’s high-performance cables are designed for challenging environments. The company adds that it can also advise clients about infrastructures beyond “pure mining applications”, which are increasingly the responsibility of mining companies, like private communications and data networks, self-contained electrical power distri- bution, short-link rail infrastructure and material handling facilities for loading centres and ports.
