The Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) New Technology Conference and Trade Show take place from 5 to 6 June 2019 at the Canvas Riversands Incubation Hub. This event offers an superb opportunity for mining companies, equipment suppliers, technology and service providers, and industry leaders to showcase the innovations that are currently in use and those that can contribute to the minerals industry of the future.

Importantly, cross-industry collaboration enables us to leverage incredible innovations and accomplishments and to develop the full industrial capability that our mining industry offers.  There are outstanding examples of innovative companies in Southern Africa that are have developed leading-edge technologies and systems engineering design approaches that have application in or potential impact on the minerals industry.

The South African motor industry is a success story of how to develop a manufacturing hub with leveraging of local-content component suppliers and service providers.

Mining Charters 3 sets very ambitious targets for local procurement and, even more importantly, local content requirements. Just like the motor industry, the mining industry will need to develop, from the ground up, the manufacturing and component supply capability to develop equipment locally to meet these charter targets.  At this same time, this offers a massive opportunity for South Africa to again lead the mining industry globally in the R&D, development, and manufacture for export of new-generation equipment.   Leveraging the rapid equipment prototyping being done in other industries using systems engineering and simulation technologies would be a logical requirement.

The first step is awareness of what capabilities already exist, and to drive broad dialogue and collaboration and take tangible steps to making this a reality through a common value creation vision. This is not easy, but requires commitment and involvement in any way that you can. Participation in events such as the SAIMM New Technology Conference and Showcase is one way to achieve this. Exhibit your capabilities, give a keynote presentation of applicable thought leadership, or offer a case study to present accomplishments or just attend to network with industry leaders.

The SAIMM works closely with the Mandela Mining Precinct (MMP) in Melville, Mining Equipment Suppliers SA (MEMSA), the South African Mineral Processing Equipment Cluster (SAMPEC) and others to drive this collaboration.

The SAIMM, which celebrates its 125th anniversary this year, has a long history of encouraging leadership and collaboration in the mining industry through its 5000 members, mining companies, technology and service providers, government, other associations and the broader mining industry stakeholders.

President Ramaphosa emphasized the importance that he and his Cabinet place on the future of the industry. As the first Head of State to address the Mining Indaba in Cape Town in February 2019, he emphasized the need for all stakeholders to come together, to create a common vision of the future, and to work together to achieve it. In doing so, he articulated the following ten principles.

  • We must foster inclusive growth for all stakeholders where mining takes place. This includes employees, their families, and surrounding communities.
  • Mining companies should establish partnerships with local governments to address and solve local problems in municipalities and communities.
  • Companies should invest in improving the living conditions of mineworkers.
  • Mining companies should invest in education and training that allows mine employees and communities to transition to a new economy aligned to industrial revolution 4.0.
  • We should all create partnerships with education and training colleges to ensure curricula are modern and appropriate.
  • We should not be afraid to embrace the principle of increased local beneficiation to create downstream benefits and employment.
  • We must collectively give more attention to health and safety in the mining industry.
  • We must constantly look to embrace the aspirations of the youth, by creating internships, job opportunities, and local entrepreneurs and SMMEs.
  • We must continue to prioritize the representation of women in all levels of management, operations, and on boards.
  • We must have the courage to include workers and their representatives on our boards.

Just like the mining industry, the SAIMM is on a journey of change to adapt to the new industry challenges and opportunities of IR4 to meet this need as a valued partner in the future of our industry.

The SAIMM has developed a strong reputation for delivering relevant, high-quality conferences, forums, business breakfasts, and now digital events to the industry.  Being a voluntary not-for-profit institution run by an elected council, it relies on committed industries volunteers to organize and deliver this extensive programme of events.

This vision can only be achieved through your participation and involvement in the broad dialogue with all industry players.

Please make contact with the SAIMM to get involved in the New Technology Conference and Trade Show from 5 to 6 June 2019.
