Safety equipment supplier MSA Africa has launched and demonstrated the workings of its new range of safety devices, the PremAire Escape compressed air emergency escape breathing device (EEBD) and the PremAire Combination Airline/Escape EEBD at this year’s Africa Occupational Safety and Health (A-OSH) Expo South Africa, held at the Gallagher Convention Centre from May 12 to 14.

MSA Africa product manager Tshepo Lebona says the company has been attending the A-OSH expo since its inception in 2011, as it regards the event as the top occupational health and safety trade show in Africa, with the event attracting more than 3 500 high- profile industry leaders from across the continent.

He says the PremAire Escape device can be fitted in less than five seconds, and provides an air supply of 10 to 15 minutes, which, he adds, enables its wearer to escape from a hazardous environment without difficulty.

“The patented PremAire Escape is designed to withstand high levels of industrial gas and harsh chemi- cal environments such as where hydrogen sulphide (H2S) is prevalent. The major components of the device have undergone critically high H2S concentration testing by a third party. Even in an environment that has H2S concentrations exceeding 25%, the permeation detected remained minimal,” he states.
Lebona highlights that, meanwhile, the PremAire Combination Airline/Escape EEBD features a unique combination valve design that combines the first stage pressure reducer, cylinder valve and cylinder gauge within one assembly.

“This smaller profile is less likely to snag in confined spaces. Further, it has a hard cover that ensures additional protection and easy handling of the air cylinder,” he details.

MSA Africa also launched and interactively demonstrated a gravity suspension harness, which Lebona says is a major breakthrough in fall protection, at A-OSH 2015.

The harness is available in a Premium and a Light version, and is suitable for use in a variety of applications that require fall protection, including rope access, first responder rescue, telecommunications, oil and gas, wind energy and general industry, he highlights.

“The gravity harness is suitable for controlled descent, positioning, ladder climbing, rescue, and fall arrest. The lightweight and comfortable gravity range provides users with high-strength and superior- quality performance. For added safety, the gravity harness range boasts a unique integral load indicator in the form of a webbing that opens in order to indicate to the user that the harness was previously involved in a fall and should not be reused, but rather discarded.”

Other Products
Lebona states that MSA Africa also demonstrated its ‘tried-and-tested’ range of self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) equipment, including full face masks, lung governed demand valves, compressed air breathing apparatus and chemical protective suits and complementary SmartCHECK automatic test bench for SCBA equipment at A-OSH 2015.
Further, a comprehensive range of full and half dust masks was also showcased at the company’s exhibition stand, which also had a full line of head, ear, eye and face protection products.

The company also showcased its portable gas detection products that included the Altair family of 2X, 4X and 5X gas detectors and the GALAXY GX2 automated test system, which automatically tests and calibrates the Altair range in minimal time.

Lebona says A-OSH serves as the ideal platform for MSA Africa to not only showcase new and existing products, but also to receive feedback from visitors at the event.

“The event hosts a variety of top industry safety decision-makers in one central location, which affords us the opportunity to gain valuable insight into precisely what existing and potential clients require for their operations,” he explains.
