Armed security officers showed more preparedness in the latest platinum strike. In this photograph, they search cars outside the Lonmin mine, in Rustenburg, north-west of Johannesburg. The Association of Construction and Mineworkers Union’s (AMCU’s) strike within the platinum sector is expected to test the extent to which the police, workers and mine owners have learnt post-Marikana lessons of maintaining law and order. A handful of dissenting shop stewards, who were facilitated at a media conference by the Workers and Socialist Party (WASP), have criticised AMCU for forcing strike consensus on workers. Significantly, WASP was represented by Mametlwe Sebei and Liv Shange (inset), who have been attempting to organise workers into an alternative formation.
