Monitech is a Family-owned and operated safety and monitoring specialist company. Monitech’s products can be found in more than 90% of the underground coal mining operations under way in South Africa.

The South Africa-based company was established in 1995 by a fourth-generation coal mining family, whose roots trace back to the South Yorkshire coal mining industry, in the UK, as far as 1911. Monitech has carved a niche role in the supply of gas detection, proximity detection, machine-mounted performance monitoring and flameproof solutions to the South African coal mining sector.

From its offices in Benoni, as well as from regionally based operations, Monitech supplies around the clock technical, equipment and parts support for all installed systems, while also offering the highest level of support to its clients, priding itself on recruiting only the most highly trained technical experts, all of whom are vastly experienced in the underground mining environment.

“We have a strong focus on research and development and have steadily increased our level of reinvestment in this area, which is critical for us to maintain our competitive advantage and market position. This research focuses on developing new solutions and product lines, as well as continually improving the performance of existing systems.”

Monitech prides itself on its ability to develop bespoke solutions for its clients – at varying levels of scale – from individual items to high-volume integrated systems. In addition, the company has a highly successful global strategic partnership with Matrix Design Group, which includes its IntelliZone proximity detection system (PDS).

Monitech emphasises that the robust and reliable IntelliZone PDS exceeds the industry’s expectations and, together with the IntelliZone precise programmable zone technology, reduces nuisance warnings and shutdowns, affording increased production time. “Mining operations will find that our products, both locally developed and manufactured as well those from our strategic partners, to be the best performing and most reliable, with a low cost of ownership.”
