MINING MAGIC – Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe attended South Africa’s second annual Mining Lekgotla in the elevated position of Acting President, a position specially conferred on him by Cabinet decree in deference to the mining industry, which drives South Africa’s economy but which is at a crossroads. Motlanthe, a former mineworker and union leader, is seen pondering the road ahead after pleading for a conscious effort to be made to turn the troubled mining sector around through structural change in the quest for improved production levels. He urged the industry to transform itself by focusing on ideas to improve productivity through innovation, human resource development and training. All role-players need to engage meaningfully to build relationships based on trust.
