Minerals and cement industries plant equipment and services provider FLSmidth will showcase its One Source solution, which focuses on the company’s flowsheet technology capability, at the 2014 Investing in African Mining Indaba, which is held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre from February 3 to 6.

“For the last three years, we have been imple- menting and informing the market about our One Source solution. One Source highlights FLSmidth’s promise of being a complete solutions supplier to the mineral industries, including after-sales service and support,” says FLSmidth capital sales and marketing manager of minerals Terence Osborn.

Osborn says it is important to engage clients early in the project life cycle, to allow the project to benefit from the technology offered in the FLSmidth product portfolio.

The company owns complete suites of technology across core mineral flowsheets, with One Source aiming to enhance the concept by offering complete solutions in these core mineral industries. Several indus-tries worldwide have moved through a life cycle of product supply, island supply and then to full solutions supply. “We have seen this happen, for example, in the cement and pulp and paper industries. Currently, there’s a trend towards full solutions in the minerals processing arena,” says Osborn.

FLSmidth offers complete solutions capabilities to the copper and associated base metals sector, including platinum, as well as the gold, coal, iron-ore and fertiliser sectors. The company has invested significantly in completing the flowsheets for mineral processing solutions associated with each of these commodities and can, therefore, offer complete solutions, together with the aftermarket life cycle and service support.

“Should a customer wish to partner with FLSmidth on a complete project solution, we then become a long-term stakeholder in that project; this includes the design, execution and operations phases,” says Osborn, adding that a key element of this involvement is the possibility of assistance of export credit agencies, where relevant.

He highlights that the Mining Indaba is the most significant mining investment event on the calendar in Africa and its aim is essentially to match investors with projects.

Although it remains primarily an invest- ment-focused event, the indaba has evolved over the last few years to include networking opportunities for companies wanting to showcase their equipment, services and project-execution capabilities.

“To a large extent, delegates at the Mining Indaba are senior decision-makers driving projects forward. The commodity analyst presentations provide a good snapshot of the conditions in the local and international mining industry.

“From a planning perspective, this is invaluable. As a global multinational supplier of minerals processing and materials handling solutions it is important for us to be at the event,” he says.

Although the company has attended the Mining Indaba for several years, this will be the third year in which it will formally exhibit.

“At the 2014 Investing in African Mining Indaba, we want to focus on our One Source solution and our business strategy that has been growing from strength to strength in recent years,” states Osborn, adding that important objectives for the company include understanding the prevailing and imminent market conditions and being updated on mining project pipelines.

Further, he states that networking with stakeholders is the single most important reason for FLSmidth’s attending the indaba, specifically with regard to the company’s existing key customers and the possibility of gaining new clients. “Most of the exploration companies and mining juniors in Africa will be present at the event and this is the ideal platform to learn more about the newer projects being studied.”

Meanwhile, Osborn says the commodity sessions at the Mining Indaba are useful. “The commodity sessions enable analysts to provide market forecasts, while the keynote addresses from all the top mining companies inform on topical industry issues.”

He adds that all this information enables the company to stay informed of the latest issues confronting the mining industry.

The company wants delegates to leave the event with a sound understanding of FLSmidth’s complete solution strategy. “We have actively been sending this message out to the mining market for the last three years and we will continue to reinforce it and build our credibility in this arena at this year’s Mining Indaba,” says Osborn.

FLSmidth adds that Cape Town is the perfect venue to attract a broad spectrum of players from the African and international mining industries and that the company is par-ticularly looking forward to world-renowned keynote speakers’ informative comments.

“Mining Indaba is a great opportunity to further our relationships with current and potential clients,” says Osborn, adding that the informal networking opportunities during the social events after exhibition hours are enjoyable and invaluable.

FLSmidth describes the event as a match-making opportunity between financiers and project owners, attracting international investors to the company.

“The event broadcasts all the right mes- sages and puts South Africa on the inter-national map. Provided there is constructive discussion and debate, events like this advance Africa’s cause in developing the continent’s vast mineral wealth.”

Osborn adds that government representa-tives from a number of Africa’s major mining economies will also be present at the Mining Indaba and discussions taking place on the platform help align governments and the mining industry.
