Training and career development institution Continuing Education at University of Pretoria (CE at UP) will be exhibiting its complement of short courses and comprehensive year programmes within the fields of project management, mining and engineering at this year’s Electra Mining Botswana exhibition, taking place at the Gaborone Fair Grounds from September 1 to 3.

The CE at UP courses are aimed at empowering individuals to make rapid, yet informed, business and operational decisions.

“Effective management of projects, as well as all potential risks involved, are key to every project’s success,” the institution says.

Courses on display at Electra Mining Botswana will include the CE at UP short course in Project Management for the mining and industrial industries, which addresses the specific requirements and unique attributes related to mining projects. Covering the mining project life cycle of concept, prefeasibility, feasibility, implementation and operational handover, this course is built on proven and internationally accepted project management practices such as ISO 21500 and the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) guidebook.

The CE at UP will also showcase its Programme and Portfolio Management short course, which addresses principles and concepts specifically applied to the management and coordination of different programmes and/or portfolios. Based on international standards and practices, the course focuses on project outcomes and programme benefits, and meeting strategic goals with better portfolio selection, management and governance. This course equips delegates with the knowledge and tools to apply concepts in a practical environment.

Another course that will be exhibited at Electra Mining Botswana is the Programme in Project Management (PPM), which trains delegates in the skills required to ensure that projects are delivered seamlessly and also equips them with the necessary tools to manage projects on time and within any allocated budget.

The PPM is a comprehensive and well-established programme that has run for 18 years, with more than 6 000 delegates from a variety of industries and government institutions having already successfully completed and benefited from the programme.

Upon completing the PPM, students can enrol for the Advanced Programme in Project Management, which takes students beyond the basic principles of project management and focuses on mastering advanced concepts in project management and integrating modern technologies and management approaches in the life cycle of a project.

The strategic aspects of projects are addressed and balanced with practical application through extensive use of software techniques. The programme content is unique and will elevate delegates’ approach above that of general project management.

Meanwhile, the CE at UP’s Programme in Comprehensive Project Management for Built Environment Practitioners is unique in applying each of the ten PMBOK knowledge areas directly to the built environment, and augmenting them with extensive coverage of the law of contracts, standard industry contracts for contractors, agreements for consultants, procurement processes and contract administration. The latest international knowledge is combined with local expertise and applied to the African context to create a best-practice reference base.

Also on show at this year’s Electra Mining Botswana will be the CE at UP’s Mining for Non-Mining Personnel short course aimed at providing nonmining personnel that offer a support function to the mining core and/or suppliers with the knowledge of and insight into mining operations. This course covers underground and opencast mining and provides a personal perspective to each role-player’s contribution to the value chain.

The Mining for Non-Mining Personnel course is facilitated by two mining industry experts and is presented over two contact days, using a full multimedia approach with presentations, DVDs with visual aids and group work using workbooks and/or manuals.

Visitors will also be able to view the Programme in Blasting Engineering, which covers the basics of commercial explosives and its application in both surface and underground mining environments. The programme covers the impact of fragmentation on the mining cycle, specialised blasting practices, environment-friendly blasting, assessment of blasting practices, downstream effects of blasting results, safety in blasting and blasting legislation.

Finally, the CE at UP will also be presenting Paper 1 of the Chamber of Mines Certificate in Rock Engineering – a general theoretical paper covering basic rock mechanics as applicable to all types of mining environments.

This workshop covers the complete syllabus for Paper 1 and prepares delegates for the competence examination on the themes of stress and strain, constitutive behaviour, rock properties, stress in rock and rock masses, as well as rock mass properties.
