Madiba will be remembered for his wisdom post-1994 – Solidarity

Trade union Solidarity expressed its condolences to the family of former President Nelson Mandela following his passing yesterday. Even though the whole world is thinking of Mandela today, it is undoubtedly also a time to spare a thought for the family, as he was ultimately a spouse, a father, a grandfather and a brother whose passing leaves a big void in a family.

‘South Africans hark back to Mandela’s time as president, which was characterised by sound race relations, optimism and a belief in the country’s future and good public administration,’ said Flip Buys, General Secretary of Solidarity. ‘In this way he set high standards that governments of the future will be measured against. Though there may be varying opinions about the policy directions of the ANC under Mandela’s leadership, he will be remembered for the wisdom with which he led the country.’

One of Solidarity’s numerous bursary funds was founded thanks to Mandela. ‘Years ago, Mandela heard about a top achiever who couldn’t get a bursary because of his skin colour. He contacted Solidarity and asked us to help the student, thereby demonstrating that all children deserve an equal chance to be successful,’ said Buys.
