Mineral processing equipment and systems provider Metso has been contracted by Kazakhstan-based copper miner Altay Polimetally to deliver two Vertimill grinding mills and carry out basic engineering, supervision, commissioning and transportation to the project.

This order follows previous contracts, valued at €25-million, for the installation and delivery of crushing and screening plants. The value of the new order was not disclosed.

The company, which also operates in Southern Africa, proposed an integrated solution, which complied with Altay’s requirements for operating efficiency and total cost solutions and increased the efficiency of its polymetallic ore processing.

The planned output of the copper ore processing plant is 550 t/h, resulting in three-million tons a year of 0/10-mm-sized end products. The quaternary crushing plant will produce 0/3-mm-sized ore, with a capacity of 450 t/h.

“Meeting recovery and throughput targets at the lowest total cost is essential to profitable operations. The high capacity of our largest machine, the VTM-4500-C, reduces the project capital cost and reduces the time to start-up, while the inherently energy efficient grinding process of the Vertimill to the desired fine product size contributes to the lowest possible total cost of ownership,” Metso stirred milling global product manager Jon Allen notes.

He adds that the mine can also expect a quick return and further improved profitability with the system’s solution. “Our experience in site management solutions, installation design and our proposal of a complete grinding system swayed Altay’s decision to continue with Metso. “In addition to the process advantages of the Vertimill mills, we also took the installation time into account,” he explains.

Further, Allen notes that less floor space and smaller foundations were required with the Vertimill proposal, slating two weeks for installation.

Metso crusher systems business manager Serge de Backer adds that these conditions were a perfect fit with the customer’s demands to drive down costs and speed up performance. “Altay is once again demonstrating their confidence in our solutions proposals,” he notes.

The 4500 HP Vertimill grinding mill, used at the primary grinding stage, produces in a closed circuit with fine screens an approximate feed size of 90%, passing 75 μm. “The two VTM-4500-Cs chosen for this application are the biggest in the range, with combined energy efficiency, low media consumption and increased end-product all factors which weighed significantly in the customer’s final choice,” De Backer says.

The secondary and tertiary crushing plant order was included in Metso Mining & Construction’s fourth quarter 2012 orders received, while the quaternary crushing plant was included in the first quarter 2013 orders received. The installations will be delivered by July 2014.

The secondary and tertiary plants include one GP500S cone crusher with large feed opening and two HP5 cone crushers with high reduction ratio. Two MF 3085-2 screens will be used for screening.

Previous Metso agreements with Altay Polimetally include the world’s biggest Lokotrack mobile crushing plant, followed by the delivery and installation of secondary, tertiary and quaternary crushing and screening plants.

Altay Polimetally will extract gold-bearing copper ore at the new mine. The planned ore extraction will be three-million tons a year and, including host rock, ten- million tons a year will be produced.
