Isaac Plains Complex, Australia
Name of the Mine
Isaac Plains Complex.
Location
Queensland’s Bowen Basin region, Australia.
Mine Owner/s
Stanmore Resources.
Brief Description
Isaac Plains comprises the Isaac Plains mine and processing facilities, the adjoining Isaac Plains East and Isaac Downs mining areas, and the Isaac Plains underground development project.
Brief History
Isaac Plains was placed on care and maintenance in late 2014. Stanmore Resources acquired the complex in November 2015.
Mining restarted at the Isaac Plains mine in January 2016 and transitioned to the operations at Isaac Plains East from July 2018 until January 2019. Most mining operations now occur at Isaac Downs.
Primary Metals/Minerals
Metallurgical coal.
Secondary Metals/Minerals
None stated.
Geology/Mineralisation
Within the Isaac Plains project area, economic coal is contained within the Permian Rangal Coal Measures (RCM). Locally, the RCM is unconformably overlain by Tertiary sediments and basalt flows, and the sequence dips towards the east at about 2° to 5.5°.
The deposit type is coal, with the potential to produce a range of thermal, pulverised coal injection and semisoft to semihard coking coal, depending on the selected beneficiation strategy.
The Leichhardt and Vermont seams host the resource and typically have a combined thickness of up to 7.5 m.
Coal is weathered to an average of 25 m. No known volcanic activity has materially impacted on the coal contained within the deposit.
Reserves
Total proven and probable run-of-mine (RoM) coal reserves as at December 31, 2022, were estimated at 39-million tonnes.
Total proven and probable marketable coal reserves as at December 31, 2022, were estimated at 28-million tonnes.
Resources
Total measured, indicated and inferred resources as at December 31, 2022, were estimated at 160-million tonnes.
Mining Method
Opencut, dragline.
Major Infrastructure/Equipment
The mine includes mine administration offices, potable water, a sewage management system, an RoM pad, a blast magazine, a mine water dam, sedimentation dams, a clean water diversion drain, a clean water dam and a water release point.
Prospects
Isaac Downs was approved for construction and operation in July 2021, and is expected to produce up to 35-million tonnes of RoM coal over 16 years.
Isaac Downs is being operated as a satellite opencut mining operation using the existing Isaac Plains infrastructure, with coal washing and train loading activities undertaken at the existing coal handling preparation plant, ensuring that a capital-light approach to this project is maintained.
