Installation and maintenance of conveyor belts require technical awareness

As mines are not all built to the same specifications, technical awareness is required for optimal conveyor belt installation and maintenance, says conveyor belt cleaning equipment designer and manufacturer Brelko Conveyor Products.

The maintenance frequency of conveyor belts depends on the size and condition of the plant; therefore, maintenance is required once a week at some plants and five days a week at other plants, says Brelko Conveyor Products sales and marketing manager Sharon Padayachee.

She notes that Brelko’s conveyor belt installation and maintenance package includes a certified service team, comprising a service technician and an assistant, who have the correct personal protective and health and safety equipment, as well as transport, to move around the site.

The service teams are fully trained on product installation and maintenance, with technical staff providing installation assistance where needed, says Padayachee.

Further, Brelko’s spillage control services include advising the client on the selection of the correct equipment for a particular application, and maintaining this equipment by adjusting it to the correct angles to ensure product life and efficient cleaning, she adds.

Padayachee notes that Brelko can effectively service companies in the mining sector, with more than 28 years of experience in the mining industry. Most of the solutions it provides are based on experience gained from dealing with mining-related challenges that Brelko clients have faced.

She says that, after servicing a plant, a manual job card is produced. “We report on all the Brelko products, as well as other equipment on the conveyor belt that might influence the running of the conveyor system, such as worn idlers and damaged belts.”

These job cards are then collated and a monthly report is produced to show all problem areas and spares fitted. In most cases, the client uses the report for monthly planning and to identify problems in the conveyor system, Padayachee adds.

Brelko maintains conveyor belt equipment for 90% of its cus- tomers, but it can also offer training on conveyor belt cleaning equipment and products, if a client requires this service.

“This training is essential to ensure that the product is maintained correctly, as incorrect installation and service could result in belt and product damage, as well as excessive use of spares,” says Padayachee, adding that an additional benefit is that Brelko area managers inspect the belts once a month to report on any maintenance that has been performed by the customer.
