Implats achieves sustainability accolade
The Standard & Poor’s (S&P) Global Sustainability Yearbook 2022 has recognised JSE-listed Impala Platinum (Implats) for its sustainability efforts.
The company was one of four JSE-listed metals and mining companies to be included in the yearbook this year and the winner of the Metals and Mining Industry Mover Award.
For Implats to have achieved the Industry Mover Award, it had to achieve a score within the top 15% of its industry and register the strongest year-on-year improvement in its industry.
Implats achieved an overall score of 60% for its integrated management approach to sustainability and its disclosures and performance across environmental, social and governance (ESG) pillars, compared with a score of 48% in 2020.
CEO Nico Muller says the notable achievement is testament to the company’s, and particularly employees’, commitment to embed sustainability as a way of work. “We aspire to become an industry leader in ESG, producing metals that sustain livelihoods beyond mining.”
About 7 500 companies were assessed for potential inclusion in the yearbook this year, while more than 2 100 companies participated in the Corporate Sustainability Assessment of S&P Global.
The assessment provides detailed ESG benchmarking insights on sustainability and business strategy; the scores are based on policies, programmes and in-depth ESG information.
To achieve mention in the S&P Global Sustainability Yearbook, companies have to score within the top 15% of their industry and must achieve an S&P Global ESG score within 30% of their industry’s top-performing company.
Implats has six platinum group metal mining operations across South Africa, Zimbabwe and Canada and employs 56 000 people.
