Exploration and development company West Wits Mining last year highlighted historical gold workings such as this one, which were unearthed during renewed opencast activity in South Africa’s renowned Witwatersrand basin. Opencast mining at levels no deeper than 400 m below surface are ongoing at two Roodepoort-area sites, with expected closure in May and December. The Wits basin has a compliant mineral resource of 3.67-million ounces of gold. Many of the historical workings, such as this one, served as ventilation shafts for large mines like Durban Roodepoort Deep and Rand Leases.
